The Audio A/B Machine transforms your DAW into a high-definition testing device.

The Audio A/B Machine DAW file is an innovative tool for audio engineers who want to carry out controlled, repeatable multitracked comparisons of any audio gear specific to their studio.

In the audio equipment industry, specialized test equipment is used to provide manufacturers with precise specifications. However, consumers often have to rely on imagination to understand how these specs affect sound quality.

The Audio A/B Machine transforms your Digital Audio Workstation into a 96 kHz high-definition testing device. It includes multitracks of five diverse styles of music as sound sources for critical listening tests and unique, configurable test tones for visual analysis of audio gear and plugins using free real-time analyzers. The included interactive PDF manual guides you through creating controlled, repeatable A/B comparisons of virtually every type of audio component in a recordings signal path from the microphone to the playback speakers while employing five styles of multi-tracked music and configurable test tones.

This innovative tool offers an ongoing educational experience, revealing how gear in your signal path affects your sound. Discover subtle audio qualities introduced by component design or settings that might otherwise go unnoticed. Whether comparing two microphones or complex recording systems, The Audio A/B Machine provides reliable, informative, and often surprising results.

The Audio A/B Machine - Overview video: With The Audio A/B Machine, you can engineer controlled, repeatable WAV file A/B comparisons of virtually every type of audio component in a recording's signal path- including plugins and speakers.

This video describes the six regions and how they are used to reveal what the gear in your studio is doing (or not doing) to the sound of your recordings.

The 14 videos along with the interactive PDF manual describe in detail how to carry out simple but informative audio tests of plugins as well as more complex advanced comparisons of gear such as analog versus digital mixers. Keep in mind, many of the gear comparisons you've heard in the past may have been counterproductive because of problematic methodologies.

Free: The Audio A/B Machine Player

The Audio A/B Machine Player plays back controlled, repeatable multitrack external audio gear comparisons engineered using The Audio A/B Machine. This Player is loaded with 64 tracks of instruments and vocals that were recorded through both a brand new Shure SM58 and a 30+ year old, very used Shure SM58. Does an old mic with decades of vocalists blasting aerosol particles onto its 6 micron diaphragm affect the sound quality? Or does being inside a kick drum or an inch away from a Marshall speaker cabinet alter its accuracy or increase it self-noise?

  • Currently included DAW files: Pro Tools and Cubase
  • Includes DAW file, 415 meg of WAV files, PDF manual
  • Includes test tones recorded through both mics for review with free RTAs
